Blenheim Bomber

Blenheim has now taken it's first trial Flight

on Friday 21st Novemeber

The question everyone is now asking me 'is what is it like to fly'  well it is  certainly different from the previous Blenheim but it does fly very well.

Changing the cockpit layout from a 'Bolingbroke' layout to that of a Blenheim has meant that, apart from the primary flight controls,

everthing is located in a different position!   This will take some getting used to, my muscle memory keeps acting on the old layout at

the moment but I am sure that this will pass, Indeed by the third test flight I couls actually put the undercarriage upand down without

first reaching for handles in front of me that were simply not there

Ergonomically the mark 1 is not good, Many of the controls are located behind you, as indeed are some of the instruments.  I now understand

how many of the Blenheim crews suffered in their training, having previously flown bi pllanes with fixed undercarriages etc;  Te new Blenheim

must have been very daunting.

In the air she flies very well the flight controls are well harmonised and once trimmed in the cruise, she settles down at 185 mph hands off.

So, to another air show season with a Blenheim again, it will be a busy but exciting year.







Members watching the news during early May 2013 will have seen the reports about work going ahead to finally raise this historic aircraft.

A large cage is currently being assembled around the airframe some 60 feet down on the bed of the English Channel and subject to weather conditions work should be completed by the end of the month.

The aircraft, which weighs in at around 5.1/2 tonnes, will then be raised to the surface, landed and transported to RAF Cosford where cleaning and preparation work will be undertaken. This will take between two to three years when the Dornier 17 will then form part of the Battle of Britain display at the RAF Museum in Hendon.

In recognition of the assistance I and the dive team have given them the RAF has invited me to be on board the recovery vessel on the day of the actual lift and after studying video footage and pictures taken by our divers it will be a remarkable day to see her above water for the first time in over 72 years since being shot down by a British Boulton Paul Defiant
